Duality, 2023 (frontal view)
Acrylic box, lights, paper, clay, dried flowers, metal chains, cocoa peat, dollhouse furniture
63 x 50.5 x 47.5 cm
I curated and participated in an exhibition titled ‘The Unforgotten Moon: Liberating Art from Guantánamo Bay’ (2023) which showcased the paintings of former Guantánamo detainee, Ahmed Rabbani, a Pakistani citizen. His artwork, which depicted the imprisonment and torture he experienced during his incarceration, was confiscated by the U.S. military. Rabbani’s human rights lawyer, Clive Stafford Smith, saw these paintings in legal meetings with him, anticipated their confiscation, and wrote textual descriptions of each piece. Collaborating with Smith, twelve Pakistani artists responded to the text to challenge this censorship. ‘Duality’ is my response to two of the texts describing Rabbani’s paintings.
